Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area offers something for every camper and outdoor enthusiast. This recreation area is located on the largest inland peninsula in the country. In fact, more than 300 miles of shoreline frame a huge block of undeveloped forest between Kentucky and Tennessee. Visitors can hunt, fish, hike, camp, and more. Historical buffs can explore the structures and access programs and self-guided tours. If you’ve never been to Land Between the Lakes, check out a few reasons why you should head there with your family.
Hit the Trails
With more than 500 miles of trails, you’ll have no trouble escaping into nature. Backpackers can carry in the food, water, and camping gear they’ll need for an overnight stay along one of several trails. Also, be sure to purchase a basic camping permit if you’re planning to stop in a Basic Camping Facility for the night. Of course, you don’t have to be an overnight backpacker to take advantage of the trails. Just get your daypack, bring plenty of water, and enjoy the incredible scenery.
The Family That Camps Together
You’ll get a better taste of the off-grid life at one of Land Between the Lakes’ basic or self-service campgrounds. Trade the amenities you would find at more developed campgrounds for true peace and solitude at one of the lakeside spots. Each campsite does come with a small fee. It is possible to camp almost anywhere with a Dispersed Camping Permit. Plan ahead and purchase it online, or stop in at one of the facilities before heading out on your adventure. Give your family a taste of a simpler life as you escape the hustle of the everyday.
On the Water
Rent kayaks or canoes, or bring your own and find your zen out on the water. In fact, more than two dozen boat ramps let you get into either Kentucky Lake or Barkley Lake. Additionally, bring the fishing poles along and catch your dinner — a beautiful bass could be on the menu. Finally, if you fancy a dip in the lake, you can access one of two designated swimming areas at either Piney Campgrounds or Hillman Ferry. Also, keep in mind that those areas are available only to the campers at those locations, and there are no lifeguards on duty.
