Where and When
For 2021, Riverfest will be on Sept. 9–11. This is the 33rd annual event. When the dates arrive, head to McGregor Park’s RiverWalk. But if you want to attend the juried art show, go to the Wilma Rudolph Event Center.
The festival starts with the Juried Art Show at the Wilma Rudolph Event Center. It is on Thursday, Sept. 9, and begins at 5 p.m., running for two hours.
Afterward, there are other festivities at McGregor Park. On Friday, Sept. 10, the festival runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The next day, Saturday, Sept. 11, it opens at 11 a.m. It will last a full 12 hours, not ending until 11 p.m.
No Admission Fee
Like in previous years, Riverfest is free to attend. So, you can easily bring your family or friends without worrying about the cost. Instead, use your savings on the admission to buy a snack or meal. Even the live music is free.
The Art Show
First, the Juried Art Show kicks off Riverfest. At this event, you will see artwork from locals, including professionals, aspiring artists, and amateurs. Specifically, there are three divisions: youth, amateur, and professional.
For each division, artists have their choice of category, including:
- Graphics and printmaking
- Digital art
- 2D and 3D mixed media (not including sculptures)
- Fiber arts
Cardboard Boat Regatta
Another traditional part of Riverfest is the Cardboard Boat Regatta. For 2021, it will be on Sept. 11 and will start at 1 p.m. To participate or watch, head to the McGregor Park Boat Ramp, which leads to the Cumberland River. As you watch, the participants in various divisions will race 100 yards.
It still isn’t too late to register for the Cardboard Boat Regatta. If you want to participate, you must pre-register by Sept. 10.

During the event, you can expect plenty of music. Look for announcements about smaller acts as so far, only the headliner is announced. It will be Generation Radio, which features four legends of rock and country music. Its members have previously been in Rascal Flatts, Journey, and Chicago, along with other experiences. So you know, the group hopes to bring classical music and 80’s rock back to life.
