For the history lovers among us or those of you simply wanting to learn more about the city, you’ll be happy to hear that you can go on a Historical Hunt in Clarksville! The Historical Hunt is an interactive walking tour of downtown Clarksville, which was established early in 1784. The creation of the city brought with it unique architectural designs for the many buildings downtown, most of which still hold their beauty today.

Where to Begin

If you’d like to participate in the Clarksville Historical Hunt, we’ve got all the details you need to know. First of all, you’ll want to begin at the Customs House and Federal Post Office. The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center was built in 1898 and is known for its gothic architecture.

After you’ve taken a few photos of the exterior, you’ll want to walk north on Second Street to Franklin Street. Once you turn left, you’ll walk until you arrive at the Blackhorse Pub & Brewery. While you’re here, be sure to swing in and grab a tasty beverage. The building was constructed in the late 1800s and the brewery has been there since 1992.

Next Stops

As you continue on your journey, you’ll want to continue west on Franklin Street until you see the historic Roxy Theatre. This was Clarksville’s first theatre and was originally known as The Lillian. First featuring silent pictures, the Roxy became a hot spot for those living in the area. However, over the years, the theatre suffered numerous fires.

The last stop on Franklin Street is the Elder Conroy Hardware Building. Offering beautiful Victorian doors, this hardware building has been around for quite some time, and in 1911 it became home to the Lyric Theater. Later, it was known as the Elder Conroy Hardware Building.

Next on the list is Clarksville’s original City Hall. You can still see the arches of the original town hall. Built as a bank in the 1870s, the building later served as a city jail. As you continue on the journey, you’ll discover the Poston Building which is one of the few buildings on the block to be known as one of the oldest remaining structures used for commercial use.
